Question 4 - Who would be the audience for your Media Product?

My target audience was teenagers between the ages of 15-19, who supposedly like social activities, such as going out and watch films with colleagues. AS this group of people are normally in school or college working hard, they sometimes also need a break and watch a good film, which gets them over the edge with fear and suspense.

According to the Blumer and Katz, I have used their theory on Uses and Gratifications which is where they believe that there are 5 functions that they believe on why the audience is attracted to one type of film.

5 Functions;

  • Escapism
  • Entertainment
  • Social Interactions
  • Education
  • Identity

I have identified 4 out of 5.

ESCAPISM
As my target audience are students, and are always studying or doing some other type of education, where it be degree levels, GCSE, A-Levels, or higher education, the would want to escape from the real world, and be sucked into a different world as their stress and troubles will be drifted away into the back of their minds.

SELF IDENTITY
This is where my audience can relate to those who are represented in this film, such as the suspect, which is who the people would identify straight away to claim that he is the murderer, and so on.

SOCIAL INTERACTIONS
My target audience is centred on young people. Young people tend to go out and interact with each other and also learn from others, which is secondary socialization. This would be a great opportunity to release a film to teenagers as they socially interact with each other, including doing stuff, such as watching films together.

ENTERTAINMENT
This means that my particular target audience goes out to be entertained by something or someone, but in this case, it's our film.

DECISIONS
I decided this type of audience as my actors are both male and female and I feel this would attract the males just as much as the females. However, in this opening sequence, the actresses are shown more than the actor, therefore bringing in an attraction of mainly just males.

I also chose this type of audience because I am alos a teenager who likes Horror movies, so I would be able to look at my work with a teenager's perspective and figure out if this particular bit in the movie was good or not.

As my location is set in a council house, and not in a public, crowded area, I feel that I am attracting a certain amount of people who are possibly around the same area, rather than a higher amount of middle/higher-class society.

Looking at previous films, I found out that Paranormal Activity 3's YouTube view-count has a massive impact on audience type. I calculated that adult women liked it just as much as male and female teenagers aged 13-24.

Question 5 - How did you address/attract your audience?

I attracted my audience by setting my location and plot in a graveyard and independent houses, which instantly tells what type of audience I am trying to attract, which is teenagers aged 15-19. I also attracted my audience by looking at films previously made during last year, such as a British film, directed by James Watkins, called 'The Woman in Black'. I noticed that many young people aged between 12-18 wanted to see the film.

I asked some people about it, and the majority of the reasons were that they wanted to be scared. I thought it could have been the type of genre I have picked, which was Horror/Thriller. It could suggest that teenagers normally care to watch themselves get scared and scream in horror.

Question 3

Question 6 - What have you learnt about technologies from the process of creating this product?

What I have learnt during the process of creating my Opening Sequence was really tough. I struggled through the process, but in fact, I also enjoyed myself while doing it, even though I wanted to give up some of the times, but I had a lot of fun in the end, creating and showing off my skills for different types of audiences to see.

SERIF MOVIE PLUS X6

Using Serif Movie Plus was easy to use as I have used this software before, in the past years, before Luqman and I had created our production logo 'FL Productions'. I also used Serif Movie Plus to add music to my Opening Sequence.

Another thing I have also learnt, is using a Blog. I had never used or even thought about using a Blog for anything before, and because of this project, I had to. Using a Blog helped me keep on track with what I was going to do after, and so on. It also helped me process my thought and feelings during the process.

BLOGS

Using the Blogger, I have learnt many things, for example, uploading images and videos. Also how to 'embed' certain videos from YouTube onto my Blog. I also learnt how to make my Blog unique, for example changing the theme of my Blog, and also the font that was being used.

There are two ways to upload videos onto your blog. You could either upload from YouTube.

Or upload it from your computer.

CAMERAS

The camera that we had used was a Flip Camera; a small, rectangular device, which looked like an iPod, and is used for recording clips up to HD 1080p, which is exactly what we wanted, as we wanted the quality of our Opening Sequence to be a high standard of amateur work. We did have trouble using this camera some of the times, as it was our first time using such a small camera, which had to have a tripod being used, as we couldn't record it hand-held. The other problem was that we didn't know how to delete error recorded files from it, so it took us a few times to get used to it, but it became much easier later on. Also, at first, I thought that to record we had to keep our fingers held onto the red button, but instead, you just press it once and it starts recording. So the first bit we recorded, we didn't really record, because it wasn't filming, so that was a little annoying.

Question 7 - Looking back at your Preliminary Task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

I have learnt a lot more about the technology side of filming and how to use them efficiently. I just thought that you would use a camera, tripod, and then shoot, but then after you shoot, you have to edit and make it look right and perfect in your eyes.

I also think that I have explored my imagination a lot better and thought about my vision for this Opening Sequence, and made sure that my vision was logical, and do-able. The process of this Opening Sequence, my ideas were too drastic and had to be toned down, as they were too imaginative, therefore the more work would of had to been put it for editing measures.

PRACTICE TASK
My Preliminary Task

In this part of the sequence, I didn't think it was good because of Luqman laughing, so it didn't look really realistic.
I think that in this part, I could of used match-on-action shots, where Luqman looks at the door handle, and the handle is filmed. Also, I could of added some non-diegetic sound to make it sound more realistic.
In this part, I think I could of used match-on-action shots again, because of the door handle again, and also non-diegetic sound could of been added again for when the door is closed.
Honestly, my Mise-En-Scene could have also been improved, such as having the setting in a very odd-looking house, with odd doors or rooms of some sort, to make it look a bit like the beginning to a factory.

Looking back at my practice task, I think I have improved and somewhat excelled in many areas of filming. I believe that my editing skills have also improved drastically, like my continuity shots in my Preliminary Task. But again, the non-diegetic sounds could have been better.

FINAL PIECE

This was my finished product before I got my target audience to watch it and give me feedback on it.

This is our finished product after we got our target audience and had been given feedback and improved from it.

Looking at where I cam from to what I produced in so little time, I think I have improved massively in my continuity, and the non-diagetic sounds. This just proves that I will keep using these skills in the future, and therefore will develop and improve them.
